Volunteering
WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO HELP US AS A VOLUNTEER?
We welcome Volunteers as important members of our team: refitting and conserving the Tectona; taking on a variety of tasks relating to our Voyages (see below); fundraising, or sailing with us for a week at a time as Volunteer 2nd Mate.
Doing maintenance work on an old sailing ship can be more than just wielding a paint brush. Perhaps it's because ships are called 'she' but it certainly feels like you are keeping her in a good place, spruced up and ready for her next outing on the foaming seas!
It's also enjoyable and rewarding to work alongside other people who have sailed in her (or maybe haven't yet but plan to do so) with the support and help of the Sea Staff - Ben the skipper and his team.
Duties could include:
- Meeting the boats when they return from sea, mainly Fridays.
- Liaising between the crew and the Office - crew lists etc.
- Helping check gear (esp. safety - eg: lifejackets) on board.
- Managing victualling. That is, helping to load on board the food from Sainsbury's delivery.
- Managing laundry (towels etc) at Yacht Haven.
- Assisting the Sea Staff with other end-of-voyage procedures.
Rewards may include:
- No salary whatsoever!
- Payment of your expenses.
- Working with some wonderful young people (our Sea Staff).
- Involvement with an amazing old boat.
- Making a tangible difference to the people who sail with us.
- Joining day-sails on board the boat.
- Taking part in social and training events with Island Trust and Tectona Trust.
- The possibility of becoming more closely involved with our charity work, if you enjoy it.
